Why Knowing Your Skin Type Matters
Understanding your skin type is the first step to building a routine that truly works for you. Using the wrong products can lead to breakouts, dryness, or irritation — so let's get it right from the start.
The 5 Main Skin Types
- Normal – Balanced, not too oily or dry. Pores are small and skin feels comfortable throughout the day.
- Oily – Excess sebum production, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin). Skin may appear shiny and pores look enlarged.
- Dry – Skin feels tight, rough, or flaky. May be prone to sensitivity and fine lines.
- Combination – Oily in the T-zone but dry or normal on the cheeks. The most common skin type.
- Sensitive – Easily irritated by products, weather, or stress. May experience redness, itching, or burning.
The Bare-Face Test (At Home)
- Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry.
- Do not apply any products.
- Wait 30–60 minutes.
- Observe how your skin feels and looks:
- Shiny all over → Oily
- Tight or flaky → Dry
- Shiny T-zone, normal or dry cheeks → Combination
- Comfortable with no shine → Normal
- Red, itchy, or reactive → Sensitive
The Blotting Sheet Method
Press a clean blotting sheet to different areas of your face after 30 minutes of cleansing. Hold it up to the light — the amount of oil absorbed tells you a lot about your skin type.
